HOW IS ORIENTAL MEDICINE DIFFERENT FROM WESTERN MEDICINE?
In the United States the main form of medicine is known as Western or Allopathic medicine. Western medicine is based on the belief that disease is a defect within the human body or a destructive process caused by a specific germ or pathogen.
In Oriental medicine the focus is on prevention and the balancing of the life force energy that flows through the body in specific meridians or channels. The belief is if there is harmony and balance, there will be good health.
Exploring the benefits of Eastern and Western medicine will help in understanding the strengths and weakness of each modality. Knowing when to use each modality, and when to combine both to achieve the greatest benefit.
EASTERN AND WESTERN MEDICINE HAVE VERY DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO WELLNESS.
Eastern medicine is over 5,000 years old. It is the oldest, literate, continually practiced medicine in the world.
Western medicine as we know it has been developing over the last 200 years. It uses state-of-the-art technology for diagnosing disorders, pharmaceutical drugs and surgery.
Eastern medicine is focused on natural health-care, “Prevention”, wellness, balance and harmony.
Western_medicine is focused on “Intervention” and utilizes specialists to reduce or eliminate symptoms.
Eastern_medicine uses the “Empirical” approach which means; we may not understand why it works,
but the fact that it does work is more important than the explanation why.
Western medicine uses the “Rational” approach which views the universe as a constant and opposes anything it cannot understand by logic or deduction.
Eastern medicine uses “similars” to gently stimulate a healing response to bring the body back into balance. The healing protocol is based on promoting health, rather than fighting disease.
Western_medicine uses “opposites” it focuses on fighting disease (“allo” means opposite from which the term allopathic medicine is derived). The healing protocol is based on fighting disease, rather than to promote health.
Eastern_medicine follows the “Internal Environment Theory.” which follows the principal that if our billions of cells each receives the nutrition and oxygen it needs and has its waste products removed, it will be healthy, therefore; TOTAL HEALTH CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY FIRST ATTENDING TO INNER HEALTH.
Western_medicine follows the “Germ Theory” which follows the principal that specific microbes (germs) produce a specific disease. In an attempt to destroy these germs it uses antibiotics, vaccines and medicines. The idea is, if there are no germs present there will be no disease.
Eastern_medicine uses acupuncture, manipulative therapy, food cures and herbology to move the natural life-force energy through “meridians” or “channels” to promote health and resolve the underlying dysfunction.
Western_medicine uses surgery, pharmaceuticals and chemicals to treat the symptoms of disease.

Prevention is unquestionably the highest form of medicine.
In the fifth century B.C.E., Bian Que wrote:
“The superior doctor cures that which is not yet an illness. * * * The average doctor cures only when an illness is present.”
Dr. Nakayama, a Japanese practitioner wrote:
“It is not the microbe that is important, but the internal terrain. The illness is not the invasion itself but the weakness that attracts the invasion.”
If you smoke and don’t think you can quit, at least take steps to protect your body from the damage being done. If you have been treated for cancer, don’t simply wait for your next check-up to see if the cancer has returned. Become proactive, cleanse your body and strengthen your immune system. The Western
approach to cancer is surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation, all of which focus on eliminating the cancer, but in the process weakens your immune system.

According to the American Cancer Society;
“The probability that an individual, in the course of their lifetime, will develop cancer or die from it, is one out of every two men (50%), and one out of every three women (33%)”.
Do you know that 70% or more of all cancers are produced as the result of dietary, nutritional or lifestyle factors? Do you know that inherited genetic factors account for less than 7% of all human cancers?
According to the National Cancer Institute;
With every five-year increase of age there is a doubling in the incidence of cancer because of the time you have been exposed to risk factors. As we age the gastrointestinal track is less efficient
in absorbing nutrients which causes the immune system to weaken. At the same time the body is less efficient at eliminating waste and toxins.
Osteoporosis rates have quadrupled in only two generations. By your 20s and 30s you achieve peak bone mass. Women in their mid-thirties begin losing 1 to 2% of calcium per year. By age 40 your ability to replace lost calcium declines. Postmenopausal women lose 4 to 5% of calcium per year.The United State has one of the highest intakes of calcium, but suffers one of the highest rates of osteoporosis. Excess calcium may contribute to kidney stones, arthritis, atherosclerosis and iron deficiency. Do you know that milk may actually cause, or contribute to osteoporosis? And, pharmaceutical medications may make your bones more brittle?
This disorder is more common in men than women. It most often affects persons over sixty years of age, although it can occur in younger people as well. The incidence of Parkinson’s disease is rising.In the mid-1970’s, one person in 1,000 was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.By the mid-1980’s one person in 200 people,And today, the estimate is one person in every 100 over the age of sixty is affected.
This condition resulting from too much circulating insulin and with insulin resistance include symptoms of elevated total cholesterol, lowered HDL (good) cholesterols, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure and excess weight. If not treated with proper preventive care the majority of these people will develop type 2 diabetes.
Keeping things in perspective:
- 2,600 people a day in the U.S. die from preventable cardiovascular disease.
- 2,000 people a year in the U.S. die from taking aspirin.
- 16,000 + people in the U.S. die from taking acetaminophen.
- 110,000 + people a year in the U.S. die from taking prescription drugs, as prescribed.
- 2,215,000 + people a year in the U.S. are hospitalized from taking prescription drugs as prescribed.
- 38,000 children a day, under 5 years old, worldwide die from starvation or preventable diseases.
From 1947 to 1984 the rate of cancer in the U.S. population increased 40%. Prostate cancer has risen by 60%.
In 1971 President Nixon initiated the “War On Cancer.” To date we have spent billions of dollars on cancer research, and each year millions of dollars are raised to find a
cancer cure! But have you ever heard of money being raised to research cancer pervention?

Understand that there is no incentive on the part of the pharmaceutical industries to promote better health. They are one of the most profitable industries in the world. The Pharmaceutical industry has more to gain when people are sick than when they are well.
The Nutrition industry is big business also; while many companies are honest and sell quality products, you need to know which products you should consider for your health-care and which ones have the potency and freshness to be effective.
Then there are the food industries which are masters in deceptive advertising and are no doubt the leading cause of most of the poor health, obesity and illness. Read the food labels or better yet adopt the policy, if it comes in a bottle, can, or a box, don’t eat it!
One example: in one 12 ounce can of cola there is the equivalent of 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. That amount of sugar will reduce your immune system by 50% for up to six hours. The caffeine will leach calcium out of your bones. Phosphoric acid leads to an acidic body which may cause digestive problems and conditions
